Disaster Recovery Rob Maynard COO IS360
Recent industry studies report that greater than 90% of business records are produced electronically and over half are never reproduced in paper form. In the event of a disaster, these records will likely be lost and businesses will be faced with lost data, lost revenue, reduced customer confidence and potential liability.
A national survey by TSNInfo (market research Company) reports that a majority of small businesses would not recover from a natural disaster due to inadequate disaster planning. Additionally, over 20% of small businesses will experience some form of disaster in a given year according to the Association of Small Business Development Center (ASBDC).
According to historical records, over 40% of businesses that experience a disaster without a disaster recovery plan will never reopen. Businesses that do reopen have less than a 30% chance of being in business two years later according to the ASBDC survey.
Reported in a study by Toigo Partners International (TPI) of 2500 small businesses surveyed, 71% do not have a disaster recovery plan. Even more surprising, over 60% of these companies believe they do not need a disaster recovery plan. History has proven this not to be the case.
Why do small businesses not plan for disasters? Many just do not have the time or take the time and believe that if a disaster strikes there is nothing they can do to save their data. Others believe that disaster planning is just too costly. Both of these are just common misperceptions.
What should a small business do?
- Develop a plan
- Prioritize assets and records
- Have a routine backup strategy for key records
- Store critical records at an offsite location.
